Stock plastic bumper is fragile and offers no recovery points. Aftermarket steel winch bumpers add protection, shackle mounts, and winch mounting in one package.
Stock XJ front bumper is plastic over a thin steel reinforcement bar. It cracks, doesn't mount a winch, and offers no real recovery points. Aftermarket steel bumpers solve all three.

Weight: aftermarket steel bumpers weigh 60-110 lbs vs ~15 lbs for stock plastic. The front coils need to be sized for this weight or you'll sag. HD coils or OME Heavy are appropriate for steel bumper + winch.
