Front Bumper (Winch-Ready)

Stock plastic bumper is fragile and offers no recovery points. Aftermarket steel winch bumpers add protection, shackle mounts, and winch mounting in one package.

Stock XJ front bumper is plastic over a thin steel reinforcement bar. It cracks, doesn't mount a winch, and offers no real recovery points. Aftermarket steel bumpers solve all three.

Good options:

Iron Rock Off Road XJ winch bumper: ~$450, similar specs.
Rusty's Off Road winch bumper: ~$500, lightweight design.
C4 Fabrication XJ Hyline: ~$700, sleek high-clearance design.
Smittybilt XRC: ~$300, budget option, decent build.
DIY: $200 in steel plus weld time.

Key features to evaluate:

Winch capacity (8k, 9.5k, 10k, 12k winch support).
Material thickness (1/4" preferred for armor; 3/16" common).
Shackle mounts (must be welded to the bumper, rated for shackle pull).
Recovery point ratings (look for D-ring mounts welded directly to bumper plate).
Mounting style (some are bolt-on to factory frame horns; others extend rearward into the frame).
High-clearance approach angle (cut up at the wings to improve approach over rocks).

Weight: aftermarket steel bumpers weigh 60-110 lbs vs ~15 lbs for stock plastic. The front coils need to be sized for this weight or you'll sag. HD coils or OME Heavy are appropriate for steel bumper + winch.

Install: bolt-on to factory frame horns. 2-4 hours. Some require minor trim work on factory body panels.
