Stinger / Pre-Runner Bumper

A stinger is a forward-projecting tubular structure that prevents the XJ from rolling forward when nose-down on a steep climb; also doubles as a brushguard.

A stinger is a tubular cage that extends forward from the front bumper and curves upward, designed to catch the vehicle before the windshield contacts the ground in a forward roll on a steep climb. Pre-runner bumpers add a tall hoop or grille guard for desert running and brush protection.

Good options:

• C4 Fabrication stinger (add-on to their bumpers): ~$300.
• JCR Offroad pre-runner: ~$280.
• Custom shop builds (typically $400-700 from a local fab shop).

Stingers are particularly useful for:

• Rock crawling with steep ascents where roll-forward is a risk.
• Desert running where brush impact is common.
• Aesthetic preference (a stinger is an iconic look).

Downsides:

• Adds significant weight high and forward.
• Reduces front approach angle if poorly designed.
• Can block radiator airflow (most are designed around this).
• Visibility — large stingers can obstruct close-in forward sight.

Most XJ builds skip the stinger unless committing to a hardcore rock crawler. For overland and moderate trail, a sleek high-clearance bumper without stinger is more practical.
