Backup Camera Install (with Double-DIN)

Difficulty 2/53–6 hrs$50–2501997-2001

Add a backup camera that displays on the double-DIN head unit when reverse is engaged. License-plate or tailgate-mounted camera, wired through the cargo area to head unit's RCA reverse video input.

Requires a double-DIN head unit with a CAMERA INPUT (RCA video, usually labeled REV CAM or BACK CAM). Most modern units include it.

Camera options:

Wiring path (the hard part on XJ): camera power lead + reverse trigger to reverse circuit at rear tail light. Camera video (RCA) routed forward — under cargo trim, through driver/passenger sill (no need to remove carpet entirely; use trim tool), up A-pillar, behind dash to head unit. Use shielded RCA cable (premade 20-25ft) to avoid alternator whine.

Head unit: most have a 'reverse gear input' wire (purple/white on Pioneer, similar on others) — connect to the same reverse circuit so it auto-switches to camera view. Set 'image flip horizontal' in head unit menu (most cams output mirrored already so YMMV).

With a winch + rear hitch carrier obscuring rear view, a camera is genuinely useful for off-road as well as parking.
