CarPlay / Android Auto Retrofit

Add wired or wireless CarPlay/Android Auto via a modern double-DIN head unit (Pioneer DMH-1700NEX, Sony XAV-AX5500), or a single-DIN with flip-out screen.

Path 1: Double-DIN head unit with bezel mod (see head-unit-upgrade entry). Pioneer DMH-1700NEX ($500) has wireless CarPlay/AA, 6.8" touchscreen, no CD. Sony XAV-AX5500 ($400) is similar with physical buttons. Kenwood DMX7706S ($450) is mid-range.

Path 2: Single-DIN with motorized flip-out screen. Pioneer AVH-3500NEX ($600) extends to 7" touchscreen when on, retracts to look near-stock. Fits factory single-DIN slot without bezel mod. Good if you want to keep the original lower dash intact.

Path 3: Tablet/phone dash mount with car audio aux input. Run a Lightning/USB to a Bluetooth FM transmitter or AUX cord to factory radio. Cheap ($30) but rough.

Wireless vs wired CarPlay: wireless is hugely more convenient — phone stays in pocket. Pioneer DMH-1700NEX does wireless; cheaper units (Sony XAV-AX1000) are wired only.

For most XJ owners, the DMH-1700NEX with a Scosche JP1346B bezel kit and Metra 70-1817 wiring harness is the sweet spot at ~$575 total parts.
