Head Unit Upgrade (Single DIN vs Double DIN Bezel Mod)

Difficulty 2/52–6 hrs$120–7001984-1990, 1991-1995, 1996, 1997-2001

XJ has a single-DIN radio slot. Pioneer / Kenwood / Sony single-DIN units are direct fit. Double-DIN requires a bezel mod or aftermarket bezel (Scosche, Metra) - common on 97-01 with HVAC relocation.

1984-1996: single DIN slot above the HVAC controls. Use a single-DIN head unit (Pioneer DEH-X8800BHS, Kenwood KDC-BT378U, JVC KD-T910BTS, etc.). Mech-less Bluetooth units run $80-150.

1997-2001: also single DIN, but the lower bezel can be modified for double-DIN. Process: remove the lower HVAC controls, cut the bezel to extend the radio opening down, relocate HVAC controls to a small panel below or to the open accessory pocket. Scosche makes a double-DIN bezel kit (PA1786B) that does this cleanly. Metra 95-6504 is another option. After mod, install any double-DIN Android Auto / CarPlay head unit (Pioneer DMH-1700NEX, Sony XAV-AX5500, Kenwood DDX9907XR).

Benefits of double-DIN: CarPlay/Android Auto with maps and music, backup camera display, larger touchscreen. Cost: bezel kit + tools + head unit = ~$400-700.

Wiring: use a Metra 70-1817 wiring harness adapter (color-codes the OEM connector to standard ISO/aftermarket) and a Metra 40-CR10 antenna adapter (XJ uses GM-style antenna connector). Speaker wire colors per Metra/Crutchfield XJ vehicle guide.

Leave a 5A always-on memory wire for radio preset retention.
