Stock XJ front speakers: 3.5" in dash, 6.5" in front door (97-01 Country/Sport). Upgrade to a coaxial 6.5" set (Kicker, JBL, Polk) plus 3.5" tweeters or a 2-way component set.
XJ factory speaker locations:
Replacement options:
Budget ($80-150 total): Kicker DSC65 6.5" + Kicker DSC35 3.5" or Polk DB652/DB351. Coaxial design, direct fit, no crossover. Bolts in.
Mid ($200-400): Polk DB6502 or JBL GTO629 component 6.5" set (woofer + separate tweeter + crossover). Mount the included tweeter in the dash where the 3.5" was — most XJ installs use a Metra adapter ring.
Premium ($400-800): Focal Performance Access PS165, Hertz DCX 165.3, JL Audio C2-650. Need a 50-75W RMS amp to make these sing.
The biggest improvement on stock head unit power (~15W/ch) is replacing the dead factory paper drivers with anything modern. Step up to a 4-channel amp (Alpine MRV-F300) for a major leap.
