Replace the factory carpet floor mats with WeatherTech FloorLiner, Husky X-act Contour, or aftermarket rubber 'tub' mats. Critical for wet/muddy use.
Stock XJ carpet rots from snow, mud, and the leaky cowl. Replacements:
(1) WeatherTech FloorLiner DigitalFit: laser-fit to XJ floorpan, raised edges contain water/mud, channel system directs liquid forward. ~$200-250 for front pair, +$100 for rear. The gold standard. XJ-specific patterns available 1984-2001.
(2) Husky X-act Contour: similar concept to WeatherTech, slightly softer rubber feel. ~$150-200 pair. Equally good for daily driver use.
(3) Husky / Smartliner cargo liner: extends WeatherTech-style protection into cargo area. ~$120.
(4) Generic rubber tub mats (Highland, Custom Accessories): universal-fit cheap option, ~$30 pair. Trim to fit. Works but slides around.
For a true wheeling rig: pull the factory carpet entirely, paint the floor with Rust-Oleum Bedliner or Raptor Liner, install drain plugs (1/2" rubber plugs in factory drain holes are usually still there under carpet), and use the rubber mats as removable surfaces. Hose-out interior.
WeatherTech also makes a Cargo Liner with raised lip and a rear-seat cargo liner for the fold-down position.
