XJ Control Arm Bushings: Symptoms, and Whether to Replace the Bushing or the Whole Arm
The rubber bushings at the ends of your Cherokee's control arms hold the axles located under the truck. When they crack and separate, the axle starts to move around — you get a clunk over bumps, a wander or a pull, uneven tire wear, and a front end that helps set off death wobble. On the XJ's thin stamped-steel arms, replacing the entire control arm is usually cheaper and cleaner than pressing new bushings, and the single step that decides how long the job lasts is torquing the bolts at ride height rather than with the suspension hanging.
Worn XJ control arm bushings announce themselves first as a squeak over bumps, then a clunk or knock over bumps and under braking as the arm shifts in its bracket, along with a wander at speed, a pull under braking, and uneven tire wear. Each arm ends in a rubber bushing: an inner steel sleeve the bolt passes through, an outer sleeve pressed into the arm, and rubber bonded between them. The rubber lets the arm swing through its arc as the suspension cycles while still holding the axle in the right place fore-and-aft and side-to-side. That is a real job. Everything about how your Cherokee tracks, brakes, and recovers from a bump depends on those axles staying put.
Rubber does not last forever, and on a Jeep that has seen twenty-plus years, road salt, and trail flex, the bond breaks down. The rubber cracks, dries, and separates from one of the sleeves. Now the arm can move independently of its mount under load. On a lifted XJ the loads are higher and the angles are steeper, so bushings that were marginal on a stock truck fail faster once you add height and bigger tires. The symptoms, in the order they show up

Confirm it before you buy parts
Do not throw bushings at a noise. Put the front of the truck on jack stands placed under the axle so the suspension stays loaded the way it sits on the ground, and chock the rear wheels. Get under with a good light and a long pry bar. Work each control arm at both ends — pry the arm against its bracket and watch the bushing. Healthy rubber flexes a little and returns; a dead bushing lets the sleeve visibly walk in the bracket, or you will see the rubber cracked, crumbling, or pushed out one side. Grab the arm and try to move it by hand as well. A bushing that is clearly separated from its sleeve is your answer.
While you are under there, check the rest of the front end in the same pass, because the symptoms overlap. Shake the track bar at both ends and confirm the track bar bolt is tight — a loose track bar mimics and amplifies everything a bushing does. Work the tie rod ends, the drag link, and the ball joints for play. Sorting the whole front end at once saves you from fixing the bushings and still chasing a wander that was really the track bar all along.
Replace the bushing, or the whole arm?
Here is the honest answer for most XJ owners: replace the entire control arm. The factory arms are thin stamped steel, and pressing the old bushings out and new ones in without a proper shop press and the correct adapters tends to distort the arm and swallow an afternoon. A set of new stock-style arms with rubber bushings already installed bolts straight in, frequently costs about the same as buying loose bushings and paying for press time, and lets you swap one arm at a time so the axle never shifts far from its position. Change them in pairs — both lowers, then both uppers — so the two sides wear together and your alignment stays symmetric.
Pressing new bushings into your existing arms is worth it in one situation: when the arms are aftermarket, adjustable, or heavy-duty units you paid real money for and want to keep. In that case the arm is worth saving and the bushing is a wear item you renew. For the stock arms, the math almost always favors replacing the whole piece. Some owners burn or cut the old rubber out and push polyurethane inserts into the retained outer sleeve to save money — it works, but read the next section before you go that way.
Rubber or polyurethane — pick rubber for the control arms
Polyurethane gets marketed as the upgrade, and for some mounts it is. For control arms on a street-driven or mild-trail XJ, rubber is the correct choice, and it is not close. The factory used rubber on purpose: the control arm has to twist as the axle articulates, and bonded rubber absorbs that twist quietly while still bonding solidly to its sleeve. Polyurethane does not bond — it rides on grease inside the sleeve — so it needs lubrication, works that grease out over time, and starts to squeak and grunt. It also transmits more noise, vibration, and harshness straight into the floor. On a truck already dealing with death wobble, stiffer control arm bushings can make the ride harsher without curing the wobble, because the wobble lives in the track bar and steering linkage, not here.
If you love polyurethane, put it where the motion is simpler and the payoff is real — leaf spring eyes, shackles, and sway bar mounts — and leave rubber in the control arms. You will get the location benefit where it helps and keep the quiet compliance where the arm needs to move.
The one step that decides how long they last
This is the part that separates a repair that lasts a decade from one that fails by next winter: torque the through-bolts at ride height. Because the rubber is bonded between the two sleeves, it twists to allow suspension travel rather than sliding. If you tighten the bolts with the suspension hanging at full droop, the rubber is clamped at that drooped angle, and from then on every inch of normal suspension travel is fighting a preload that slowly tears the bushing apart. Snug the bolts during assembly, then set the truck at normal ride height — on the ground, on ramps, or with stands under the axle so it carries the weight — and do the final torque there.
Torque values vary by model year and by which arm you are on, and the published numbers are not consistent between sources, so pull the figure for your year from the factory service manual. As a general reference for the front lower arms, expect torque in the neighborhood of 65 to 85 lb-ft at the nuts, with the uppers lower than that; confirm against your FSM rather than trusting a single forum post. What matters more than hitting an exact number to the pound is that the bolts are genuinely tight, the threads are clean, and the final tightening happened with weight on the suspension. Get that right and a set of rubber bushings will outlast most of the other work you do to the front end.

None of that requires special skill — it requires doing the boring steps in the right order.
Do it that way and you will feel it immediately.
