XJ Steering Box Adjustment: How to Take Up On-Center Play (and When Not To)
Your Cherokee wanders on the highway, the wheel has an inch or two of dead motion before the tires react, and you have heard you can "just tighten the steering box." You can — the XJ's Saginaw gear has an over-center adjuster screw on top that takes up on-center lash. But it is the last thing to touch, not the first, and if the play comes back in a few hundred miles the box is worn out and needs replacing, not adjusting. Here is how to do it correctly, and how to know whether it will actually help.
The XJ uses a Saginaw recirculating-ball steering gear with an over-center adjuster on top — a hex/Allen screw (usually 3/16") through the middle of a lock nut (usually 5/8"). To take up on-center play, remove the electric auxiliary cooling fan above the box, clean the mud out of the adjuster socket, hold the adjuster still while you loosen the lock nut, then turn the adjuster clockwise in 1/4-turn steps, re-locking the nut and test-driving between each step. Do not exceed about a half turn total or you risk binding the gear. Critically, this only helps if the play is genuinely in the box: on an XJ, wandering and death wobble are almost always the track bar, tie rod ends, drag link, or ball joints. Rule those out first. And if the adjustment feels good but goes loose again within a few hundred miles, the internal bearings are worn and the box needs to be replaced.
First, make sure the play is actually in the box
This is the part people skip, and it is the part that matters most. The steering box is near the bottom of the XJ loose-steering diagnosis list for a reason: it is rarely the real culprit. Far more often the wander or the wobble is coming from the front track bar, a loose or wallowed-out track bar bolt, worn tie rod and drag link ends, or failing ball joints. If you adjust the box while one of those is worn, you will feel a brief improvement and then be right back where you started — or worse, you will mask a genuinely dangerous linkage problem behind a tighter-feeling wheel.
Work the front end in order before you touch the adjuster. Put the front on stands, grab the track bar at the axle end, and try to move it up, down, and side to side — there should be zero play; any movement means a worn bar or a loose mount. Then grab each tie rod end and the drag link individually and try to work them; zero play again is the standard, and any clunk means that joint is done. Check the ball joints and the unit bearings the same way. Only when every joint in the linkage is tight, and you still have a dead spot on center where the wheel moves before the tires do, is the steering box a reasonable suspect. A loose box feels like slack right at the straight-ahead position that firms up as you turn off center — that on-center vagueness is its signature.
What the adjustment actually does
The over-center adjuster sets the mesh between the sector shaft (the gear the pitman arm bolts to) and the ball nut riding on the worm shaft. The gear is designed with the tightest mesh at the center of travel, because that is where the vehicle spends nearly all its time and where wear concentrates. Turning the adjuster in reduces the lash at that center position. What it does not do is fix wear out at the ends of travel, or wear in the worm bearings themselves. That is why it is a targeted fix for one specific symptom — on-center slop — and not a cure-all for a tired box.
Understanding that limit tells you what to expect. If your box has a genuine on-center dead spot and the rest of the gear is still healthy, a quarter-turn or two will bring the steering back to life and the improvement will hold. If the whole gear is worn, you can take up the center lash but the looseness returns quickly because the bearings underneath are shot. There is no shame in adjusting a worn box to get through a trip or to get home — it is a legitimate stopgap — but plan on a remanufactured gear if it will not hold.
The procedure, step by step
The adjuster lives on top of the steering box, which sits low on the driver's side of the engine bay. The electric auxiliary cooling fan mounts right above it and blocks access, so pull that fan first; removing the air box buys you more elbow room but is not strictly required. With the top of the box exposed you will see the lock nut (commonly 5/8") with the hex adjuster screw (commonly a 3/16" Allen) poking through its center. On a Jeep that has lived outdoors, the Allen socket is usually packed with dried mud — clean it out with a pick so the wrench seats fully, or you will round it.
The key to a clean adjustment is holding the adjuster screw still with your Allen key while you break the lock nut loose — if the screw turns with the nut, you lose your reference. With the nut loosened, turn the adjuster clockwise a quarter turn. Then hold the adjuster in that new position and re-tighten the lock nut against it so nothing moves. Lower the Jeep and drive it. Evaluate: is the on-center slack gone, and does the wheel still return to center on its own after a turn? If it is still loose, repeat in another quarter turn. The hard limit is about a half turn total from where you started — beyond that you are into territory where you damage the gear rather than adjust it.
Do not overtighten — self-centering is a safety feature
The failure mode of this job is going too far. Crank the adjuster in past the point where the center lash is gone and the gear binds — either right at center or out at the ends where there was almost no wear to take up. The symptom is unmistakable on a test drive: the steering feels sticky, and after you come out of a turn the wheel will not return to straight on its own. You have to physically steer it back to center. That is dangerous, because a car relies on its steering self-centering to track straight and to recover after a bump at speed. If you feel that stickiness or lose the return-to-center, back the adjuster off until normal self-centering comes back. The correct setting is the smallest amount that removes the on-center slop, and no more.
One more honest caution: adjusting the box is not a substitute for fixing a death wobble. If your XJ wobbles violently after a bump between 45 and 65 mph, that is a linkage problem — a track bar or its bolt, almost always — and tightening the steering box will not fix it and may hide how bad the real problem is. Treat wobble as its own repair and get the front end sorted before you go near the adjuster.

The honest verdict
Adjusting the XJ steering box is a real, useful fix for one specific problem — an on-center dead spot on a box whose bearings are still good — and it takes fifteen minutes with an Allen key and a wrench once the fan is out of the way. What it is not is a fix for death wobble, a fix for worn linkage, or a permanent answer for a box that has gone loose all the way through. The mistake to avoid is reaching for the adjuster first. Confirm the track bar, tie rod ends, drag link, and ball joints are tight, then adjust only the slack that is genuinely left in the box.
Set it by feel, in quarter turns, and stop the moment the on-center slop is gone and the wheel still returns to center on its own. If it holds, you saved yourself a box. If it goes loose again within a couple hundred miles, you have your answer — the gear is worn out, and a remanufactured Saginaw is the right call. Either way you will have done it right, and you will know exactly where your steering stands before you take the Cherokee back up to speed.
