A second battery is the upgrade that lets you run a winch, fridge, and camp lights without waking up to a truck that will not start. The clean way to do it on a Power Wagon is a fitment-specific tray, an AGM auxiliary battery, and a DC-DC charger or smart isolator so the house load can never drain your starting battery. Budget $250 for a basic isolated setup, up to $900 for a DC-DC system with heavy cabling. This is high-current, safety-critical wiring: fuse every cable at the source and torque every lug.
The Power Wagon's engine bay has room for a second battery, and the factory 220 A alternator can support a properly managed dual setup. The point of the system is isolation — the starting battery stays untouched so the truck always cranks, while the auxiliary battery feeds the fridge, lights, inverter, and air compressor. Done wrong, a hard-wired second battery drains both and leaves you stranded; done right, it is the backbone of an overland electrical system.
A voltage-sensing relay (smart isolator) connects the two batteries only when the alternator is charging, then separates them when the engine is off — cheap, proven, and enough for moderate loads. A DC-DC charger does more: it charges the auxiliary battery on a correct multi-stage profile regardless of the alternator's behavior, which matters for AGM and lithium house batteries and for newer trucks whose smart charging varies output voltage. For a fridge-and-camp build, the DC-DC path protects battery life and is worth the extra cost; for a winch-backup-only build, an isolator is adequate.
Use a tray built for the Ram 2500 / Power Wagon so the battery is bolted down hard — a loose battery in an off-road truck is a fire and acid hazard. Run heavy cable (2/0 from the alternator/main battery, 4-gauge for accessory feeds) in protective loom away from heat and chafe points. Fuse every cable within a few inches of its power source with an ANL or MEGA fuse sized to the wire — an unfused battery cable that shorts on the frame is a fire. Crimp and heat-shrink every lug; do not rely on hardware-store butt connectors for high current.
Feed the fridge, light bar, and compressor from the auxiliary battery through a fused distribution block or a switch panel, not straight off the post. Keep the winch on the starting battery (or a heavy combined feed when winching) so it has full cranking-battery current available. Re-check voltage at both batteries with the engine running and under load to confirm the isolator/charger is doing its job before you trust it on a trip.
Do the amp-hour math before buying the battery, not after. A 12 V fridge averages 1–2.5 A depending on ambient heat, so an overnight stop costs 15–30 Ah; add camp lights (0.5–1 A) and phone/radio charging and a realistic weekend budget is 60–90 Ah between charges. A Group 65 AGM delivers roughly 70–75 Ah — but drawing an AGM below 50% regularly kills it, so usable capacity is nearer 35 Ah. That covers one night with margin, not two. If the itinerary is multi-night with little driving, either step up capacity (a larger tray-compatible AGM, or lithium with a DC-DC charger) or plan on 30–45 minutes of engine runtime per day — at highway alternator output, that restores a typical overnight draw. Log actual loads with a cheap inline DC meter on the first trip; measured numbers beat estimates.
The factory Warn winch is the wildcard load this platform adds. Winch hard with the engine running so the 220 A alternator carries most of the draw. Under the hood, the Hemi bay runs hot — that is why the auxiliary battery should be AGM (or the lithium relocated out of the bay entirely; most lithium batteries derate or fault above roughly 140°F charging temperature). Finally, after the install, verify charging behavior at idle and at cruise with the truck's parasitic loads on; if the auxiliary battery chronically undercharges, check output at the alternator before blaming the isolator.
