The Power Wagon runs an AAM 9.25 front and AAM 11.5 rear axle, a BorgWarner BW44-47 transfer case, and a 66RFE automatic (some later trucks use an 8-speed — verify by year). Axles take synthetic gear oil (75W-90 front, 75W-140 rear for towing duty), the transfer case and transmission take ATF+4. The reason this service matters more on a Power Wagon than on a street truck: the electronic-locking axles and frequent water crossings make contaminated diff fluid a real risk. Service the diffs after deep water, not on a calendar.
This truck's drivetrain is heavy-duty and reliable, but it earns its keep in mud and water, and gear oil is hygroscopic — it pulls in water through the axle vents during a crossing. Milky gear oil means water intrusion and an axle that will rust its bearings if you ignore it. A full drivetrain fluid service refreshes all four reservoirs and is the right time to inspect the electronic locker wiring and the axle vents.
The front AAM 9.25 and rear AAM 11.5 both house factory electronic lockers. Pull the diff cover (or drain plug where fitted), inspect the fluid for water (milky) or metal (failing bearings/gears), clean the cover and magnet, and refill: 75W-90 synthetic in the front, and 75W-140 synthetic in the rear for trucks that tow or carry weight. If your locker or limited-slip calls for friction modifier, add it. After deep water crossings, check both diffs for milky oil and service immediately if found — this is the single most overlooked Power Wagon maintenance item.
The BW44-47 transfer case uses ATF+4 — drain the case via its plug, refill to the fill-plug level, and verify the shift motor connector is clean. The 66RFE transmission also runs ATF+4; a proper service drops the pan, replaces the filter and pan gasket, and refills to level at temperature. A full fluid exchange takes more than a pan drop, but a pan-and-filter service on the interval is enough for most trucks. Verify your model year's transmission before buying parts — later Power Wagons may use a different unit and filter.
Calendar intervals assume a street truck. If you cross water above the axle tubes or wheel in mud, inspect the diff fluid afterward and re-service when it shows water. Extending the axle vent tubes higher up the body is a cheap modification that keeps water out of the diffs in the first place — pair it with this service.
The diffs and transfer case use a fill-to-the-hole rule: with the truck level, the correct level is the bottom of the fill-plug threads — overfilling does nothing but push fluid past the pinion seal. The AAM 11.5 rear takes roughly 3.5 quarts, the AAM 9.25 front about 2.8 quarts, the BW44-47 transfer case about 2 quarts of ATF+4, and a 66RFE pan-and-filter service returns roughly 5-6 quarts (a full exchange is closer to 15). Torque diff-cover bolts in a cross pattern to about 30 ft-lb and fill/drain plugs to about 24 ft-lb — the aluminum threads strip if you lean on them. Use a fresh gasket or a clean RTV bead on covers without a gasket, and let RTV skin over before refilling or it weeps at the seam. If your electronic locker or limited-slip specifies friction modifier, add the stated ounces or the clutches chatter on turns.
Factory intervals put axle and transfer-case fluid around 60,000 miles under normal use and transmission fluid around 60,000-120,000, but a Power Wagon rarely lives a normal life — treat deep water crossings and hard towing as interval-enders, not calendar events. DIY cost is roughly $120-180 in fluid for all four reservoirs; a shop charges $300-350, mostly labor. The job pairs naturally with an engine oil change, and any milky or metal-flecked diff fluid you find is your cue to read the front locker troubleshooting guide before water reaches the locker wiring.
