Worn tie rod and drag link ends cause loose, wandering steering and uneven tire wear, and on a heavy solid-axle truck they are a safety item — a failed end means a loss of steering. The factory linkage is adequate for stock use; trucks that wheel hard or run larger tires bend or wear the stock parts and benefit from forged heavy-duty replacements. Budget $150-$600 depending on parts grade, and always finish with a professional alignment. You can set toe well enough to drive, but the truck needs a proper alignment to wear tires evenly.
The Power Wagon steers its solid front axle through a tie rod (connecting the two wheels) and a drag link (connecting the steering box to the passenger-side knuckle, in the typical HD layout).
