# Lockers on a Raptor — You Already Have a Rear E-Locker, So When Does a Front Locker Make Sense?
Most Raptor owners need no locker upgrade at all. Every Raptor across all three generations ships with a factory electronic locking rear differential — flip the switch and the rear axle is fully locked. That covers the overwhelming majority of what a desert truck is asked to do. So the honest verdict is: keep the factory rear locker, and only look at a front locker if you are deliberately building a slow-speed rock crawler, which is not what a Raptor is.

The factory rear e-locker is a genuine selectable locker, not a limited-slip. It stays open for normal driving and locks 50/50 when you engage it at low speed. The front diff is open (with a Torsen-style helper on some configurations), which is correct for a high-speed desert truck — you do not want a locked front end at 60 mph in the whoops.
Because the rear is already handled, there is nothing to "install" on most builds. Adding an aftermarket rear locker only makes sense on the rare truck whose factory unit has failed and is out of warranty.
A front locker on a Raptor is a niche, deliberate choice. It helps in exactly one situation: low-speed technical climbing where the front tires need guaranteed bite — ledges, off-camber rock, deep ruts. If your Raptor has become a crawler that sees that terrain, a selectable front locker (ARB air or Eaton electric) on the front differential is the upgrade.
It is a selectable unit for a reason: a permanently locked front would wreck steering and on-road manners. You engage it only when you need it, then unlock for everything else.
This is IFS front-differential work, which is more involved than a solid-axle third-member swap. Setting up backlash and pinion preload on the front carrier is shop-level work unless you have done gear setup before — a bad setup whines and fails. Budget for the shop labor as part of the job.
Do not add a front locker expecting it to fix high-speed traction or wandering — those are alignment, tire, and shock questions. A locker only changes low-speed lockup. If you are chasing desert performance, your money belongs in shocks and tires, not a front locker.
A selectable front locker runs $850 in parts plus an on-board air source for an air unit, and $700–$1,000 in shop setup labor — call it $1,600–$2,200 done right. A replacement rear locker (only for a failed factory unit out of warranty) is a similar figure. For most owners the correct spend here is zero.
