AW4 Shift Solenoid Diagnosis

The AW4's most common failure is electrical, not mechanical — a shift solenoid drifting out of spec or burning open, which you can confirm with a multimeter before you spend a dollar on parts.

Harsh or missed shifts, a truck that pulls away like it's starting in third, high RPM at highway speed because the converter won't lock — these point at the solenoid pack far more often than at worn clutches. The AW4 is a legendarily durable Aisin-Warner unit; when it shifts wrong, suspect the electrical control side first. Diagnosing before replacing means you swap the one solenoid that's actually bad instead of guessing your way through a valve body.

The AW4 uses three solenoids bolted to the valve body: S1 and S2 control the shift schedule, and S3 controls torque converter lockup. In first gear S1 is energized; shifting to second energizes both S1 and S2. Lose S1 and you have no 1st or 2nd in Drive; lose S2 and you lose 2nd/3rd; lose S3 and the converter never locks, so you run high RPM and heat on the highway. Each solenoid should read 11–15 ohms — figure roughly 13 ohms at a healthy one. Zero ohms means a shorted coil; infinite (open) means a burned-out coil. Either reading condemns that solenoid.

On 1996+ OBD-II trucks, pull codes with a scanner before touching the pan. P0753 flags shift solenoid A (S1) electrical, P0758 flags shift solenoid B (S2) electrical, and P0743 points at the torque converter lockup circuit; P0705 is the transmission range (neutral safety) switch, which mimics solenoid symptoms and is worth ruling out. On 1987–1995 OBD-I trucks the TCU flashes fault codes — bridge the diagnostic connector and count the flashes against the factory chart. Codes narrow the search, but confirm with a resistance test before replacing anything; wiring and connector faults throw the same codes as a bad solenoid.

Steps

  1. Pull transmission fault codes. Scanner on 1996+, TCU flash codes on earlier trucks. Note which solenoid the code points to.
  2. Warm the transmission to operating temperature, then park on level ground and let it cool enough to work under safely. Disconnect the battery.
  3. Place a wide drain pan under the transmission. Loosen the pan bolts in a cross pattern and let the front edge drop to drain — expect 3–4 quarts to come out with the pan off. Remove the pan.
  4. Locate the solenoids on the valve body. S1, S2, and S3 are the small cylindrical coils with two-wire connectors. Trace the harness: at the case connector, S1 is dark blue/white, S2 is violet/white, and S3 (lockup) is white/black.
  5. Set your multimeter to ohms. Probe across each solenoid's terminals, or between the solenoid terminal and its mounting bracket ground. A healthy solenoid reads 11–15 ohms.
  6. Flag any solenoid reading 0 ohms (shorted) or infinite/OL (open coil). A reading a few ohms outside the window is marginal — replace it while you're in here.
  7. If every solenoid reads in spec, move upstream: back-probe the case connector and check continuity from the TCU harness to each solenoid, and inspect the connector pins for corrosion or spread terminals. A good solenoid with a bad connection reads fine at the coil but still sets a code.
  8. To replace a solenoid, unbolt it from the valve body (typically a 10mm head), unplug it, and fit the new one. Torque valve body solenoid bolts to roughly 84 in-lb (7 ft-lb) — snug, not gorilla-tight; the aluminum strips easily.
  9. Replace the filter and pan gasket while the pan is off — cheap insurance on a 30–50k-mile service interval. Clean the pan magnet of clutch material.
  10. Reinstall the pan, torque the bolts to 84 in-lb in a cross pattern, and refill with Dexron VI (Dexron III supersession) to spec. Start the engine, cycle through the gears with your foot on the brake, and recheck level hot.
  11. Clear the codes and road test. Confirm crisp 1-2-3-4 shifts and converter lockup at cruise. A returning code with a known-good solenoid points at wiring, the TCU, or the range switch.
