Pre-1997 has an inline frame-rail filter; 1997+ has a combined fuel filter/pressure regulator on the fuel pump module inside the tank.
Pre-1997 XJs use an external inline fuel filter on the driver-side frame rail near the rear of the cab. It is a 10mm hex thread-on style or a quick-disconnect style depending on year. Replace every 30,000 miles; relieve fuel pressure first (pull the fuel pump relay and crank for 5 seconds). The Mopar 33004281 or Wix 33042 is the common service part. From 1997-2001 the fuel filter is integrated into the in-tank fuel pump module - there is no scheduled service for it short of replacing the entire module (see fuel pump entry). 1997+ owners can replace the regulator/filter portion of the module without dropping the tank in some cases, but it is labor-intensive. Symptoms of a clogged pre-97 filter include hesitation under acceleration, hot-restart failure, and reduced top-end power.
