Front Locker — Selectable Traction Up Front

The rear locker in the companion guide is the first and biggest traction upgrade. A front locker is the next step for a 4Runner that wheels genuinely hard — it plants both front tires on a steep, off-camber ledge where an open front diff stalls the climb. The catch is the independent front end, which sets the rules for which locker you buy and how you are allowed to use it.

With both rear tires already locked, traction loss moves to the front. Locking the front sends torque to the front tire that still has grip, which is what clears a stepped ledge or a loose, off-camber climb.

On the 4Runner's independent front suspension a selectable locker is the only sane type. An automatic or lunchbox locker in the front of an IFS truck loads the steering under power, produces unpredictable push in corners, and hammers the CVs on pavement. A selectable — an ARB air locker or an Eaton e-locker — stays fully open for normal steering and engages only when you flip the switch, so daily manners and tire scrub are untouched.

Every 4Runner from 2003 forward runs an 8 in clamshell, reverse-rotation front differential with 30-spline output. It is the same basic unit across 03-24 4Runners and 05-23 Tacomas, which is why the aftermarket support is good.

The part number is not one number, and this is where orders go wrong: the ARB front unit is split by ring gear ratio. RD121 covers 3.73 and numerically lower ratios; RD111 covers 3.91 and numerically higher. A 5th gen 4Runner leaves the factory at 3.727, so a truck that has not been regeared takes RD121 — but a truck that has already gone to 4.56 or 4.88 takes RD111. Confirm the ratio stamped on your carrier or count it by hand before ordering, and cross-check against ARB's current application chart, because supersessions happen.

Note that the rear is a different animal: 03-09 trucks use an 8 in rear, and 2010 and later got the improved 8.2 in rear with shimmed side adjusters, more ring gear bolts, and larger bearings. Rear part numbers do not carry across to the front. The rear locker guide covers that side.

The independent front uses CV half-shafts, not a solid axle shaft. A locked front planting torque at full steering lock and full droop is exactly the load that snaps a CV or an inner stub. Three habits keep that from happening:

  1. Engage with the wheels as straight as the line allows. Torque through a CV at extreme angle is the failure case.
  2. Modulate the throttle. Bouncing the truck on a locked front is what breaks parts; steady, deliberate throttle is what climbs.
  3. Turn it off at the top. The front locker is a tool for a specific obstacle, not a setting you leave on. Driving a locked front on hard surfaces binds the driveline and scrubs tires.

This is the whole reason most builds lock the rear first and add the front only when the wheeling actually demands it. On 33s or larger, also budget for stronger half-shafts or accept that CVs become a consumable.

This is genuine axle-setup work, not a bolt-in:

  1. Drain the front diff, remove the front driveshaft, and pull the front differential assembly. On the 4Runner the clamshell design means the carrier comes out as an assembly rather than through a rear cover.
  2. Record the existing backlash and the carrier shim stack before you disturb anything. You are rebuilding to the same pattern unless you are regearing at the same time.
  3. Press the old carrier bearings off, press new ones onto the locker carrier, and install with the recorded shims as a starting point.
  4. Set backlash to spec — typically 0.005-0.008 in on this diff — and verify with a dial indicator on the ring gear.
  5. Check the tooth contact pattern with marking compound on both drive and coast sides. Adjust shims and repeat until the pattern is centered. This step is where the job is either done or not done.
  6. Set carrier bearing preload with an inch-pound torque wrench.
  7. Drill and fit the bulkhead for the air line, route the line away from heat and steering movement, and secure it every few inches. A chafed air line is the most common ARB failure and it always happens on the trail.
  8. Mount the compressor somewhere dry and protected, wire the solenoid and switch on a fused, switched circuit, and pressure-test at 100-105 psi before you refill the diff.
  9. Refill with 75W-85 or 75W-90 GL-5 gear oil per the service manual and check for leaks after a heat cycle.

As of 2026, an ARB front air locker for the 8 in clamshell runs roughly $1,150-1,400, plus $350-450 for a compressor, manifold, solenoid, and switch, plus $150-220 for bearings, seals, and setup hardware. Shop labor for the install and setup runs $700-1,200, and doing a regear at the same time adds roughly $400-600 in parts but very little extra labor.

Realistic all-in: $1,700-2,200 doing your own setup work, $2,400-3,000 at a shop. An Eaton e-locker where available runs a few hundred less on the hardware but does not bring an air system you can also use for tires.

Add a front locker only after the rear, and only on a 4Runner that wheels hard enough to need it. Buy the selectable that matches your ring gear ratio — RD121 for 3.73 and lower, RD111 for 3.91 and higher on the 8 in clamshell. Drive it with the wheels straight to spare the CVs, set the carrier up properly, and combine it with a regear while the diff is open. It is the upgrade that unlocks the steepest lines.
