Reservoir shocks are the highest-return suspension upgrade on a loaded Power Wagon, and the cheapest way to get them wrong is to buy on brand instead of on valving. A $200-a-corner Fox 2.0 fixes the fade that ruins a long washboard run. A $500-a-corner King or a matched Carli system buys re-valvable damping tuned to your weight. What none of them buy is spring rate — if the truck sags under a bed load, the springs are the problem and a stiffer shock only makes it ride worse.
Ram tunes the Power Wagon soft on purpose. It is coil-sprung at both ends — solid AAM 9.25 in front on coils located by control arms and a track bar, solid AAM 11.5 in rear on coils in a five-link with its own track bar — and there are no leaf springs and no struts anywhere on the truck. That coil setup is why it articulates well, and the soft damping is part of the same design goal.
The cost shows up when you add weight. A stock damper is a small oil column in a thin body; on a sustained washboard run it heats, the oil thins, the fluid aerates, and damping force drops off. That is fade, and you feel it as a truck that stops settling after a dip and starts pattering across the surface. Add a bumper, a winch, armor, a rack, and gear to a truck already near 6,900 lb curb and the stock shocks reach that point far sooner.
A remote or piggyback reservoir addresses the cause directly: more oil, more surface area to shed heat, and a nitrogen charge separated from the working fluid so the oil resists aeration. Larger 2.0 or 2.5 in bodies add piston area, which is what lets a shock generate meaningful force on a heavy truck without going harsh at low speed.
Weight first. Valving is a curve, not a quality level. A shock valved for an unloaded truck is underdamped once you hang 400 lb of bumper, winch, and rack on it; a shock valved for a heavy build rides stiff and busy when the truck is empty. Weigh the truck loaded the way you actually drive it — a CAT scale run costs about $15 and beats guessing.
A payload correction worth making. The Power Wagon has the lowest payload in the Ram 2500 lineup, roughly 1,400-1,500 lb depending on configuration, because the coil rear and the off-road hardware eat into it. Its tow rating, around 10,000 lb, is likewise well under a conventional Ram 2500. Read the door-jamb sticker on your truck for the real numbers. The practical consequence: most slide-in truck campers put a Power Wagon over its rear GAWR before any suspension part is chosen, and no shock fixes an overloaded axle. If a camper is the goal, the honest answer is a different truck or a much lighter camper.
Then ride height. A shock has a finite stroke. On a lifted truck a stock-length shock tops out in droop — the shock becomes the droop limiter, which destroys the articulation you lifted for and eventually tears a mount — or runs out of compression travel and slams into its own bump stop. Buy the shock length that matches your lift, and confirm the extended and collapsed lengths against your measured droop and bump numbers rather than trusting a "fits 2-3 in lift" listing.
Then springs. On a coil truck, ride height and load capacity live in the coil. If the truck sits low with gear in it, order the matched coil with the shock. This is exactly why Carli sells systems rather than loose shocks.

The DSC adjuster on the Fox 2.5 is the feature most owners underuse. High-speed compression controls the big square-edged hit; low-speed controls body roll and dive. Set low-speed firmer for a loaded highway run and back high-speed off for washboard, then re-check after a real trip.
King's argument is service life: a rebuildable shock gets new seals, fresh oil, and a re-shim for roughly $150-250 per shock every 30,000-50,000 hard miles, which over ten years is cheaper than replacing sealed units twice.
Shock replacement is ordinary wrenching, with two details that matter more on this truck than most.
If a lift is going on at the same time, the geometry work — adjustable track bars, caster correction, brake line length, and the electronic sway bar disconnect's travel envelope — belongs to the lift, not the shock. Do not let a shock install become an unplanned lift.
A shock only controls a spring; it cannot fix a chassis that is out of balance elsewhere. One safety note: if the truck develops a steering oscillation after a shock or lift change, that is death wobble and it is a geometry or worn-component fault — a track bar, ball joints, Articulink joints, or a loose steering box. Premium reservoir shocks are the fix when a loaded Power Wagon outpaces its soft factory dampers on washboard and big hits. Weigh the truck, buy valving for that weight, buy length for your ride height, order the matched coil if it sags, route the reservoirs cleanly, and torque everything at ride height. Done that way it is the suspension change a heavy, built Power Wagon feels most.
