Caster, Camber, Toe — What Each Does and How to Set It

Caster gives you straight-line stability, camber keeps the tire flat on the road, and toe controls how the front wheels point relative to each other — on a solid-axle XJ, toe is the one you set yourself, and getting caster right after a lift is what keeps the truck from wandering.

Alignment is three angles, and on an XJ they don't all behave the way they do on a car. The front Dana 30 is a solid axle, so camber and caster are tied to how the axle sits under the truck — you can't dial them in independently the way you can on an independent suspension. That changes what's adjustable and what isn't. If your XJ wanders at highway speed, eats the edges off your front tires, or started feeling vague after a lift, the cause almost always traces back to one of these three numbers being off. Understanding what each angle does tells you which one to chase.

Caster is the tilt of the steering axis viewed from the side — the line through the upper and lower ball joints. Positive caster leans that line back toward the driver, which makes the front wheels want to return to center and gives you stable, planted highway tracking. Factory XJ spec is about +7° (the FSM allows roughly +5.25° to +8.5°). Too little caster and the truck darts and wanders; that's the classic complaint after a lift, because lifting rotates the axle and drags caster down with it.

Camber is how far the top of the tire leans in or out viewed from the front. Factory spec is about -0.25° (range roughly -0.75° to +0.5°). On a solid axle camber is not adjustable — there are no shims or cams for it from the factory. If camber is way out, you're looking at a bent axle tube, worn ball joints, or worn unit bearings, not an adjustment.

Toe is whether the front wheels point slightly toward each other (toe-in) or away (toe-out), measured across the front of the tires versus the rear. The XJ wants a little toe-in: about +0.25°, which works out to roughly 1/16" to 1/8" of total toe-in. Toe is the angle you can set at home, and it's the one that wears tires fastest when it's wrong — too much of either feathers the tread in a matter of weeks.

Steps

  1. Park on flat, level ground with the steering wheel centered and pointed straight. Roll the truck forward several feet and let it settle so the suspension and bushings sit naturally — don't bounce it into place.
  2. Set tire pressures to your normal running spec on all four corners first. Uneven pressure throws off every measurement you're about to take.
  3. Check caster and camber first, because you can't set toe correctly on an axle that's sitting wrong. Caster and camber on a solid axle come from axle position. If the truck is lifted and wandering, the fix is rotating the axle with adjustable lower control arms (or cam bolts for small corrections) to bring caster back toward 4–6° for 33s and as little as 3–4° for 35s and up — not a toe change. Camber you only verify; if it's out of range, inspect ball joints, unit bearings, and the axle tube for damage.
  4. To measure toe with a tape, mark a point at the center height on the front face of each front tire — same spot on both. Measure the distance between the marks. Roll the truck forward a half turn so those marks rotate to the rear face at the same height, and measure again.
  5. Compare the two numbers. If the front measurement is smaller than the rear, you have toe-in; if larger, toe-out. You want the front measurement to be 1/16" to 1/8" smaller than the rear — that's your target toe-in.
  6. To adjust, loosen the clamp bolt on the tie rod adjusting sleeve. Soak it in penetrating oil first; XJ sleeves seize. Rotate the adjusting sleeve to lengthen or shorten the tie rod, which swings both front wheels in or out together.
  7. Turn the sleeve a small amount, re-clamp lightly, then re-measure. Toe moves fast — work in small increments and recheck after every change.
  8. Once toe-in lands in the 1/16"–1/8" window, position the sleeve clamps so the bolt gaps don't sit over the sleeve slot, then torque the clamp bolts to about 15 ft-lb.
  9. Recheck that the steering wheel is still centered when driving straight. If it's now off-center, the toe was split unevenly between the two sides — you can rebalance it at the drag link, but that's a separate adjustment.
  10. Drive it. The truck should track straight with light hands and the tires should wear evenly across the tread. If it still wanders, you're back to caster, not toe.
