Compression Test and Leak-Down Test on the XJ 4.0L

A compression test tells you whether each cylinder is sealing; a leak-down test tells you where a weak one is losing its seal — rings, valves, or head gasket. Run both when you're chasing a misfire, oil burning, or sizing up a used XJ before money changes hands.

The 4.0L is famous for running forever, but "forever" still has limits — and a tired or cracked engine hides well at idle. A compression test is the fastest way to read the mechanical health of all six cylinders, and it's the single best $35 you can spend before buying a used Cherokee. When one cylinder reads low, a leak-down test is the follow-up that names the cause instead of guessing. These two tests answer different questions, so the order matters: compression first to find a weak cylinder, leak-down second to find out why.

Both tests want the same prep. Park on level ground, set the brake, and get the engine to operating temperature if it runs — a warm 4.0L seals better and gives numbers that match the factory spec. If it won't run or runs badly, test it cold and read the cylinders against each other rather than against the book.

Pull all six spark plugs before testing. Leaving the others in makes the engine fight itself while cranking and drops every reading. On the 4.0L the rear plugs (cylinders 5 and 6) sit close to the firewall and the exhaust manifold — let the engine cool enough to not burn your forearm, and work a 5/8" plug socket on a long extension back there. Lay the plugs out in cylinder order; their color and wear is its own diagnostic.

Kill spark and fuel so the engine can't fire or flood while you crank it. On the 4.0L the clean way is to pull the ASD (Auto Shut Down) relay from the underhood power distribution center — it cuts both the injectors and the ignition coil in one move. On RENIX trucks (1987–1990) the relay layout differs from the later High-Output trucks (1991+), so confirm you've pulled the right relay by verifying the engine cranks but won't start. Disabling fuel also keeps raw gas out of your cylinders, which would wash the rings and corrupt a wet test.

  1. With all plugs out, the ASD relay pulled, and a fully charged battery, thread the compression tester into the cylinder 1 plug hole hand-tight. Screw-in adapters seal far better than the press-in type — don't fight a rubber tip while a helper cranks.
  2. Hold the throttle wide open, or have a helper floor the gas pedal, so the engine breathes freely. A closed throttle starves the cylinders and lowers every reading.
  3. Crank the engine through about 4 to 5 compression strokes — you'll hear the gauge tick up with each one and then plateau. Note the peak reading, then release the gauge valve and zero it.
  4. Repeat for all six cylinders, writing down each number next to its cylinder. Keep your cranking time and throttle consistent so the readings are comparable.
  5. Compare. A healthy 4.0L cranks 120–150 psi, and the factory limit is no more than 30 psi spread between the highest and lowest cylinder. Even numbers in the 120s on a high-mile truck are fine. One cylinder 30-plus psi below the rest is your problem child.
  6. If a cylinder reads low, run a wet test: squirt about a tablespoon of engine oil into that plug hole, then crank and read it again. If the number jumps up, the rings are worn — oil temporarily sealed the gap. If it barely moves, the leak is up top at the valves or head gasket, and a leak-down test will confirm it.

Two low cylinders that sit next to each other — classic on the 4.0L is cylinders 3 and 4 — point at a blown head gasket or a cracked head between them. The notorious 0331 casting head is prone to cracking in exactly that spot, so adjacent low readings on a 2000–2001 truck deserve a hard look.

A leak-down test pressurizes one cylinder with shop air and measures the percentage that escapes, then lets you hear exactly where it's going.

  1. Bring the cylinder you're testing to top dead center on the compression stroke — both valves closed. Pull the plug, watch for the piston to rise (a long screwdriver or a thumb over the hole helps), and line up the timing mark. Get this wrong and you'll read a wide-open valve as a failed cylinder.
  2. The cylinder will want to spin the engine over once air hits it. Put the transmission in gear (manual) or hold the crank bolt with a breaker bar so it can't rotate off TDC.
  3. Connect the leak-down tester to the plug hole, set the regulator, and apply roughly 100 psi. Read the percentage of leakage on the second gauge.
  4. Interpret the number: under 10% is a healthy cylinder; 10–20% still runs but is worth watching; over 20% signals worn or damaged sealing surfaces; over 30% is a real problem. As with compression, consistency across cylinders tells you more than any single figure.
  5. Find the leak by ear and eye. Air hissing from the tailpipe is a leaking exhaust valve. Air at the throttle body or intake is an intake valve. Air from the oil filler cap or dipstick tube is past the rings. Bubbles in the radiator (cap off, careful — cool engine) mean the head gasket or a cracked head is venting into the cooling system.
  6. Repeat for each suspect cylinder. On the 4.0L, remember a cracked exhaust manifold can also make exhaust noise — but it won't show up as cylinder leakage, so the gauge keeps you honest.
