The XJ's Dana 30 front axle shafts wear out at the U-joint, and a clicking, vibrating, or clunking front end on turns usually means a joint is on its way out — this covers pulling the shaft, replacing the joint, and knowing when to step up to a stronger CV-style shaft instead.
First, a clarification worth making up front: the Dana 30 in your Cherokee does not use true CV (constant-velocity) joints from the factory. Each front shaft is two pieces joined by a cross-and-cap U-joint, and people call the whole assembly a "CV axle" out of habit. That distinction matters when you shop — a factory-style repair means a fresh U-joint, while a true CV upgrade (RCV, Ten Factory) is a different, pricier part that stays smooth at big steering and lift angles. You'll feel a dying U-joint as a rhythmic click or clunk that speeds up with the wheels, worst on full lock in a parking lot, sometimes with a vibration under acceleration. Left alone, a failed joint can seize or come apart and take the shaft, unit bearing, or knuckle with it. On a lifted XJ the joints work at steeper angles and wear faster, which is exactly when a stronger shaft earns its cost.
Steps
Park on level, hard ground, chock the rear wheels, loosen the front lug nuts a half turn, then lift the front and set it solidly on jack stands under the unibody frame rails. Remove the front wheel.
Remove the brake caliper: take out the two caliper slider/guide bolts, lift the caliper off the rotor, and hang it from the coil with wire or a bungee so its hose carries no weight. Slide the rotor off. Set brake fasteners aside and torque them to your factory service manual spec on reassembly — brakes are not the place to guess.
Straighten and remove the cotter pin, then remove the axle nut cover and spring washer. Break the axle hub nut loose with a 36mm socket and a breaker bar while an assistant holds the brake, or leave a lug or two snug and the tire on the ground to break it before lifting.
If your XJ has ABS, unbolt and pull the wheel speed sensor from the knuckle before disturbing the unit bearing, and set it somewhere clean. Bent or grease-fouled sensors throw codes.
Remove the three 12-point unit bearing bolts from the back of the steering knuckle. Pull the unit bearing/hub straight out. If it's stuck from corrosion, tap it evenly with a brass drift or thread the axle nut back on a few turns and rock the hub — never pry against the ABS tone ring.
Pull the outer axle shaft out through the knuckle. On 1984–1994 trucks the passenger side runs through the vacuum center-axle-disconnect (CAD) housing on the inner tube; on 1995 and later the axle is one continuous shaft with no disconnect. Note which system you have before you start yanking.
Inspect the shaft. If the U-joint is the only problem, replace just that. Support the shaft in a vise or press, remove the U-joint snap rings, and drive the caps out one at a time with a socket slightly smaller than the cap and a matching receiver on the far side. A press is cleaner, but a socket, a hammer, and patience get it done.
Match the replacement joint to your shaft: pre-1995 standard shafts take the smaller Spicer 5-260X (1.062" caps); 1995-and-later shafts and any earlier ABS shafts take the larger 5-297X spec, where the stronger non-greaseable Spicer 5-760X is the common upgrade. Measure your caps if you're unsure.
Install the new joint square in the yoke, seat one cap, then work the cross into it and press the opposite cap in until both snap rings drop into their grooves. Non-greaseable Spicer joints come pre-packed and sealed — do not add grease, and do not overpress and crush a cap. The joint should move freely with light drag, no notchiness.
Slide the shaft back into the axle tube and seat it fully into the differential side gears — you should feel it engage. Fresh axle seal? Now's the time, since the shaft is already out.
Reinstall the unit bearing/hub over the outer stub and into the knuckle. Torque the three bearing bolts to 75 ft-lb. If the bearing was loose, notchy, or leaking while you had it off, replace it now rather than pulling this apart again.
Reinstall the ABS sensor if equipped, then fit a new axle hub nut and torque it to 175 ft-lb. Install the spring washer, nut cover, and a fresh cotter pin — reusing a cotter pin here is how a hub nut backs off on the trail.
Reinstall the rotor and caliper, torque the caliper fasteners to your factory service manual spec, and pump the brake pedal firm before moving. Refit the wheel and torque the lug nuts to 95 ft-lb.
Test drive slow. Cycle the steering lock to lock in an empty lot and listen — the click should be gone. Recheck the axle nut and lug torque after the first short drive.

On a lifted XJ, a plain replacement U-joint may not last — a true CV upgrade costs far more but is the honest fix if steep angles killed the last one
