Oil Pressure Sender vs. Oil Pressure Switch — 4.0L XJ

"Sender" and "switch" get used like the same word, but they do different jobs — this guide explains which one your XJ has, where it lives, and how to swap it.
Here's the distinction that trips people up. An oil pressure switch is a basic on/off device: it closes (or opens) a circuit at a set pressure to drive a warning light — the idiot light. An oil pressure sender is a variable resistor that changes resistance with pressure, feeding a real gauge so the needle can sweep across a range. A switch knows two things, "fine" and "not fine." A sender knows the whole scale. If your XJ has the gauge in the cluster, you have a sender; if you only have a warning lamp, you have a switch. They are not interchangeable — bolt a switch into a gauge truck and the needle pegs or sits dead.
On the 4.0L both parts live in the same neighborhood: passenger side of the block, right above the oil filter. Trace the filter up to the threaded adapter elbow on the block, and the small unit screwed into that boss is your sender (or switch). It's a one-wire connection on most gauge-equipped XJs, and the factory connector has a brittle red lock tab that loves to snap after twenty-plus years of heat cycling.
A word before you spend money: the XJ's factory oil pressure gauge is not a precision instrument. It's resistance-driven and tends to park near the middle when things are healthy, then drop when they aren't. A flailing needle, a reading pinned at 80 PSI, or a gauge that sinks as the engine warms is almost always a dying sender — but "almost always" isn't "always." Before you condemn the engine over a gauge, put a mechanical test gauge on the block and read actual pressure. The 4.0L should hold at least 13 PSI at warm idle and roughly 37–75 PSI at 1,600+ RPM. If the mechanical gauge says you're in range and the dash gauge is lying, the sender is your problem, and that's a fifteen-minute fix.
Steps
Confirm the failure first. Put a mechanical oil pressure gauge on the sender port and compare it to the dash. Real pressure in spec + wrong dash reading = bad sender. Real pressure low = stop here, you have an actual oil pressure problem, not a gauge problem.
Disconnect the negative battery terminal. You're working on an electrical sensor next to a hot exhaust manifold and a spinning belt — kill the power and let the engine cool.
Find the sender above the oil filter on the passenger side of the block. Slide the red safety lock tab on the connector to the side, then lift the secondary clip with a fingernail and pull the harness straight off. Go gently — brittle tabs crack. If the tab faces an awkward way, you can rotate the whole sender a fraction with the wire still on to reach it, but do not spin it fully with the harness attached.
Position a drain pan under the sender. A little oil will weep out when it comes loose.
Back the sender out counterclockwise with a 1-1/16" deep socket or a large adjustable wrench. Keep debris out of the open port. If oily sludge has built up in the threads, run a pipe cleaner through before installing the new one.
Prep the new unit. If it didn't come pre-coated, wrap the threads with two or three turns of PTFE tape — enough to seal, not so much that it sheds into the oil galley. Don't overdo it.
Thread the new sender in by hand to avoid cross-threading, then snug it with the socket. This is a tapered pipe thread sealing on the threads themselves — firm and leak-free, not gorilla-tight. Cranking on it cracks the boss or the sender body.
Reconnect the harness until the clip clicks, slide the red lock tab back into place, and reconnect the battery.
Start the engine and let it reach operating temperature. Watch the gauge settle into its normal range and check the new sender for weeping. Recheck the connection if the needle still misbehaves — a gauge pinned high after a fresh sender usually means a bad connector or open wire, not a second bad part.
Why it works
One of the cheapest, fastest fixes on the truck — a part under $45 and a single hand tool restore a working gauge.
No special tools, no fluids to drain beyond a few drops, and no electrical diagnosis if you've already confirmed pressure is good.
Knowing sender-versus-switch keeps you from buying the wrong part and chasing a "broken gauge" that was only ever the wrong component.
Trade-offs
A new sender only fixes the gauge. If actual oil pressure is genuinely low, this changes nothing — and skipping the mechanical-gauge check first can mask a real problem.
Aftermarket senders are hit-or-miss; some read poorly or leak out of the box, and the XJ is picky about sensor quality. An OEM-spec Mopar/Crown unit is the safer buy.
The factory connector's red lock tab is brittle. Plan for the possibility of replacing the pigtail if it shatters during removal.
