Buying a Used Raptor: What to Inspect Before You Pay
A used Raptor is a desert truck, and a lot of them have spent their lives being used like one. The chassis and drivetrain are tough, but a Raptor that's been jumped hard, run on worn shocks, or skipped its maintenance hides its scars well — at least until you're the one paying to fix them. This is a generation-by-generation walkthrough of what actually goes wrong and exactly what to look at before money changes hands.
The three things that turn a good deal into a money pit are the same across every generation: a beaten desert past the seller won't mention, deferred maintenance on a truck that needs it, and a drivetrain problem that's expensive to fix. For Gen 1 (2010–2014) the watch items are the 6.2L V8's general wear and tired leaf packs. For Gen 2 (2017–2020) it's the 3.5L EcoBoost cam-phaser rattle and 10R80 transmission shudder. For Gen 3 (2021–2023) the trucks are newer, so you're mostly checking for abuse and verifying the more complex suspension is intact.
Budget for a pre-purchase inspection at a Ford-literate shop on anything you're serious about. On a vehicle that costs this much and gets driven this hard, a $150–250 inspection is the cheapest insurance you'll buy.
Start with the generation — it tells you most of the story
Before you look at a single specific truck, know which generation you're shopping, because the failure modes are completely different. A quick reference: Gen 1 (2010–2014) runs the 6.2L naturally aspirated V8 and a 6-speed automatic on a steel body with leaf-sprung rear suspension. Gen 2 (2017–2020) switched to the 3.5L high-output twin-turbo EcoBoost V6, the 10R80 10-speed automatic, and an aluminum body, still leaf-sprung in the rear. Gen 3 (2021–2023) kept the EcoBoost and 10-speed but moved to a five-link coil rear suspension, added an optional factory 37-inch tire package, and offered live-valve adaptive shocks. The supercharged 5.2L Raptor R arrived for 2023 and is a separate, pricier conversation.

The universal walkaround: signs of a hard desert life
A Raptor that's been driven the way it was built to be driven isn't automatically a bad buy — these trucks are engineered for it. What you're separating is normal hard use from abuse and neglect. Start underneath, because the underside tells the truth the carwash hides.
Skid plates and frame: Get under the truck and look at the skid plates and frame rails. Deep gouges, crushed skids, or a bash plate that's been hammered flat tell you it's taken hard impacts — not disqualifying on its own, but a cue to look harder at everything in the impact path. Shocks: The Fox internal-bypass shocks are the heart of the truck. Look for oil weeping down the shock body — a light film is acceptable on a used unit, but wet, dripping seals mean a rebuild is due. Push down hard on each corner: it should compress and settle without bouncing repeatedly or making knocking sounds. Shocks are a rebuildable wear item, but a full set of rebuilds runs several hundred to over a thousand dollars, so price it into your offer if they're tired.
Tires and alignment clues: Check tire date codes and tread depth, and look for uneven wear — feathering or one-sided wear hints at bent steering or suspension components or a neglected alignment after a hard hit. Mismatched tires or a cheap brand on an expensive truck is a sign of corner-cutting ownership.
Body and panel gaps: Uneven panel gaps, overspray, or paint that doesn't match between panels point to collision repair. Gen 1 (2010–2014): the 6.2L V8 trucks
Gen 1 is the most mechanically straightforward Raptor and, with the 6.2L V8, the most durable engine in the lineup. There are no turbos to worry about, and the 6-speed automatic is robust. What you're checking here is age and wear, because the youngest Gen 1 is over a decade old.
Engine: The 6.2L is generally trouble-free if maintained. Listen for noisy lifters or timing-chain rattle on a cold start, confirm there are no oil leaks at the valve covers and oil pan, and verify the cooling system has been kept up — a desert-run V8 that's overheated repeatedly is worth scrutinizing. Avoid the 5.4L: A small number of very early Raptors were built with the 3-valve 5.4L V8. It's underpowered for the truck and has a less desirable reputation than the 6.2L. Confirm you're looking at a 6.2L truck — the vast majority are, but verify.
Rear leaf packs: The leaf-sprung rear is durable but fades with age and hard use. Sagging rear ride height, a harsh or clunky rear end over bumps, or leaves that have lost their arch all point to a tired pack. Gen 2 (2017–2020): the EcoBoost trucks — read this section twice
Gen 2 is the most-shopped Raptor and the one with the two failure modes you must actively test for. Both are well documented, both have known fixes, and both are expensive enough that they should change your offer.
Cam-phaser rattle: The 3.5L EcoBoost can develop a rattle from worn camshaft phasers, most audible as a brief metallic rattle on a cold start that fades after the engine builds oil pressure, and sometimes on light throttle. It tends to show up as mileage climbs. A cold start is the single most important part of the inspection — insist on hearing the truck started stone cold, not warmed up before you arrive. A persistent rattle means a phaser job, which is labor-intensive and not cheap. 10R80 transmission shudder: The 10-speed automatic can develop a shudder — felt as a vibration or quick judder, often at low-to-mid speeds under light load — frequently traced to torque-converter behavior and fluid condition. On the test drive, pay attention through the 20–50 mph range and on light acceleration. A truck that shudders, hunts between gears, or bangs into shifts is telling you something. Turbos and intercooler: Twin turbos add inspection points the V8 doesn't have. Listen for unusual whistling or whining, watch for blue smoke under hard acceleration, and on a truck driven hard in dust, ask about intercooler and intake maintenance. Excessive boost-related codes in a scan are a flag.
Rear leaf packs again: Gen 2 is still leaf-sprung in the rear, so the same fade check from Gen 1 applies — sag, harshness, and lost arch on a truck that's been worked hard.
Gen 3 (2021–2023): newer trucks, different checks
Gen 3 trucks are recent enough that age-related wear is less of a concern, but they're complex, and many are still being driven hard. The EcoBoost and 10R80 checks from Gen 2 still apply — a low-mileage Gen 3 is less likely to show cam-phaser or shudder symptoms, but you still want a cold start and a careful test drive.
Five-link coil rear suspension: The new rear setup rides and articulates better but adds links, bushings, and (on live-valve trucks) electronic shocks to inspect. Look for torn bushings, bent links, and any shock that's leaking or throwing a fault. A truck with live-valve shocks should show no suspension warning lights, and the ride should feel composed, not harsh or uncontrolled.

Warranty and recalls: Some Gen 3 trucks are recent enough to retain factory powertrain coverage. Check the in-service date and run the VIN for open recalls and remaining warranty — coverage on the EcoBoost and 10-speed has real value given the repair costs.
The test drive: what you're actually feeling for
Insist on a cold start before anything else — it's your one chance to hear cam-phaser rattle honestly, so don't accept a truck that's already warm. Once moving, work the 20–50 mph range and light-throttle transitions to surface 10R80 shudder, and feel for clean, decisive shifts with no hunting or banging.
On a rough patch of road, the suspension should soak up bumps without knocking, clunking, or excessive rebound — those sounds point to worn shocks or suspension bushings. As a broad framework, Gen 1 (2010–2014) trucks are the most affordable entry into a real Raptor; well-kept examples command a premium over high-mileage or rough ones, and a clean low-mileage Gen 1 can hold its value surprisingly well as a collectible V8. Gen 2 (2017–2020) spans the widest range because it's the largest used supply — mileage and the cam-phaser/transmission health are the biggest price levers, and a documented phaser repair or transmission service is worth paying a little more for. The trap is paying a clean-truck price for a truck that needs work. A set of shock rebuilds, a tired leaf pack, a looming phaser job, or a transmission service add up fast — easily several thousand dollars if more than one is due. Price those into your offer rather than discovering them after. A seller with full service records and an honest account of how the truck was used is worth paying a premium for; a seller who's vague about the truck's history on a vehicle built to be beaten is worth walking away from.
