EVAP System — Hose Inspection and Purge Valve

The EVAP system on an XJ fails quietly — thirty-year-old vapor hoses crack, the purge valve coil dies from heat, and the first sign is usually a check-engine light or a whiff of gas. A seasonal hose inspection and a five-minute purge valve test catch these problems before they strand a cold-natured idle or fail an emissions test.

The evaporative emissions system routes fuel-tank vapor through the charcoal canister and, when the engine is warm and running, pulls it into the intake through the purge valve to be burned. Every rubber line in that circuit is now decades old, and the purge valve — an electrically switched vacuum valve — is a known wear item on Chrysler products of this era; the coil winding degrades from underhood heat and vibration until the PCM flags the circuit. A purge valve stuck open is an unmetered vacuum leak that leans out the idle. One stuck closed saturates the canister and brings fuel smell and hard hot starts. Cracked hoses do both jobs badly at once.

This is an inspection-and-test routine, not a parts-cannon job. Work through it once a year — spring is a good habit, before trail season — and replace only what fails. Know your generation before you start. RENIX trucks (1987-1990) use a canister purge (CANP) solenoid in the engine bay and are notorious for brittle plastic vacuum tubing that cracks near the front of the engine. HO trucks (1991-1995) keep the canister and purge hardware underhood. From 1997 on, the canister moved under the truck ahead of the fuel tank, but the purge solenoid stayed in the engine bay near the intake, held by a small bracket with one electrical connector and two hoses. 1996 is a transition year — verify what you have before ordering anything.

Steps

  1. Pull codes first (1996+). Scan for stored and pending codes before touching anything. P0455 is a large leak, P0442 a small leak, P0441 incorrect purge flow, P0443 the purge solenoid circuit itself, and P1494/P1495 point at the leak detection pump on 1998-2001 trucks. RENIX and early HO trucks won't set OBD-II codes — on those, the inspection below is the diagnostic.
  2. Check the gas cap seal. Pull the cap and inspect the rubber gasket for cracks, flat spots, or debris. A worn cap seal is the most common EVAP fault on these trucks. If the gasket looks tired, replace the cap, clear any codes, and drive a few days before chasing anything else.
  3. Trace every vapor hose you can reach in the engine bay. With a flashlight, follow the lines from the purge valve toward the throttle body/intake and back toward the canister (or toward the firewall and frame rail on 1997+ trucks). Flex each rubber section with your fingers — age cracks show at the bends and at the ends where hoses slip over fittings. On RENIX trucks, pay special attention to the plastic hard-line sections at the front of the engine; they get brittle from heat and snap where they meet rubber connectors.
  4. Check hose ends and clamps. Vapor hoses run at low pressure, so a loose or split hose end won't hiss like a vacuum leak — it fails silently. Any hose end that's split, swollen, or slides on its fitting without resistance gets trimmed back to good rubber or replaced outright. Use fuel-resistant vapor hose only; ordinary vacuum hose swells and breaks down with fuel vapor exposure.
  5. Find and identify the purge valve. On 1991+ trucks it's a small plastic solenoid on a bracket near the front of the intake manifold or on the passenger-side fender area — one two-wire connector, two hose ports. On RENIX trucks look for the CANP solenoid near the canister on the driver's-side fender. Unplug the connector and pull both hoses, labeling which port each came from.
  6. Click test. Apply 12V (or a 9V battery for a quick check) across the solenoid's two terminals. You should hear and feel a distinct click as the valve opens. No click means the coil or the valve internals are dead — replace it. A scanner that can command the purge duty cycle does the same test without pulling the valve.
  7. Vacuum-hold test. With the valve de-energized, connect a hand vacuum pump to the engine-side port and pull about 15 in-Hg. A good valve holds vacuum steady — bleed-down means the valve is stuck partially open and is leaking fuel vapor into your intake at idle. Now energize the valve; vacuum should release immediately. Fails either half, replace it.
  8. Coil resistance test. Set your multimeter to ohms and measure across the two terminals. A healthy coil on these solenoids reads in the rough range of 14-30 ohms. An open reading (OL) or near-zero means the winding has failed — this is the classic cause of P0443.
  9. Replace the valve if it failed anything above. One bolt or a bracket clip, swap the hoses to the correct ports (they are directional — match your labels), plug in the connector. Verify the hose ends grip the new valve's ports snugly; add small clamps if they don't.
  10. Clear codes and verify. Clear the codes, then drive normally for a few days. EVAP monitors run under specific conditions — a half-full tank and a cold-start morning drive help the monitor complete. If the same code returns after the purge circuit checks good, move to the charcoal canister guide, because the fault is downstream of what this routine covers.
