Never run an engine in a closed garage — not to warm it up, not to check an idle, not for thirty seconds. Carbon monoxide is invisible, odorless, and can reach a lethal concentration in a closed single-car garage in under ten minutes. An open door helps but does not make it safe.
Why this matters
Carbon monoxide kills more than 400 people in the United States every year outside of fires, and running an engine in an enclosed space is one of the most common ways it happens. CO binds to hemoglobin roughly 240 times more readily than oxygen, so your blood stops carrying oxygen even while you keep breathing normally. Nothing warns you. There is no smell, no visible haze at dangerous levels, and the early symptoms — headache, fatigue, mild dizziness — feel like an ordinary long day in the shop.
The trap is that CO impairs judgment before it disables you. People don't collapse the moment the air turns bad; they get foggy, decide to finish one more step, and then can't get to the door. That's why the rules below are absolute, not situational.
Key point: A cold engine is the worst offender. Before the catalytic converter reaches operating temperature — the first several minutes of running — CO output is many times higher than at warm idle. Carbureted rigs and older vehicles without functioning cats produce high CO the entire time they run.
Where CO comes from in a shop
- Any running engine — the obvious one, and worst at cold start and rich mixtures. If you're tuning a carb, you're standing next to a high-output CO source.
- Fuel-burning heaters — unvented propane and kerosene heaters burn clean when properly adjusted, but produce CO when the flame is starved of air or the burner is dirty. In a tight garage they also consume the oxygen they need to burn clean.
- Generators — a portable generator makes as much CO as dozens of idling cars. Never inside the garage, even with the door open. Run it outside, at least 20 feet from the house, exhaust pointed away.
- Gas pressure washers and small engines — same combustion, same CO. Outdoor equipment stays outdoors when running.
The rules for running an engine
Best: back the vehicle out of the garage and work in open air. For most idle checks, leak hunts, and warm-ups this costs you nothing.
If it must run indoors — dialing in a carb on a stand, chasing a noise you can only hear under a roof — use an exhaust extraction hose: a heat-rated hose clamped over the tailpipe, routed out the door or through a wall port, with the door open behind it for makeup air. Shops are required to have these for a reason. A garage-length run of flexible exhaust hose costs less than one ER visit.
An open door alone is not ventilation. It depends entirely on wind direction. On a still day, exhaust pools in the garage and drifts toward the back wall — where you're standing. If you're relying on the open door, add a box fan pushing air out a second opening so there's actual cross-flow, keep run time to a minimum, and never let the vehicle idle unattended.
Attached garages leak into the house. The door to the kitchen, the ceiling penetrations, the gap under the drywall — CO migrates through all of them and can reach dangerous levels in bedrooms above the garage. Warming up a vehicle inside an attached garage, even with the overhead door fully open, has killed people who never entered the garage themselves.
Detectors — the home alarm is not enough for a shop
The residential CO alarm on your hallway ceiling is built to the UL 2034 standard, which deliberately delays alarming at low concentrations to prevent nuisance trips — it's allowed to stay silent at 70 ppm for over an hour. That's the right design for protecting a sleeping family from a slow furnace leak. It is the wrong design for a garage where levels can spike fast while you're working with your head under a hood.
- Get a low-level CO monitor for the shop — one that displays the actual ppm reading and alerts at 10–25 ppm. Knowing the number matters: it tells you whether your ventilation is working before you feel anything.
- Mount it at breathing height, roughly 4–5 feet up, near where you actually work — not directly over the tailpipe, not in a dead-air corner, not next to the open door where fresh air will keep it happy while the back of the shop fills up.
- Replace on schedule. CO sensors degrade — most are rated for 5 to 10 years. The manufacture date is printed on the back. An expired detector is a decoration.
- Still keep a UL 2034 alarm in the house near the door to an attached garage and outside sleeping areas. The two devices do different jobs.
Know the numbers
- 0–9 ppm — normal background. Your target while working.
- 25–50 ppm — ventilation is failing. Fix the airflow before continuing. OSHA's 8-hour workplace limit is 50 ppm.
- 200 ppm — headache within a couple of hours. NIOSH treats this as a ceiling never to exceed.
- 400+ ppm — life-threatening with sustained exposure. A running engine in a closed garage blows past this quickly.
Common mistakes
- "The door's open, it's fine" — an open door without cross-flow is wind-dependent luck, not ventilation.
- Warming up the vehicle inside an attached garage — CO enters the house even with the overhead door open. Back it out first.
- Trusting the hallway CO alarm to protect shop work — UL 2034 alarms are designed to ignore the concentrations that matter while you're wrenching.
- Running a generator in the garage during an outage — this is one of the leading causes of CO death in the United States. Outside, 20 feet out, every time.
- Pushing through a headache — a headache that builds while an engine or heater is running is CO exposure until proven otherwise, not dehydration.
- Using an unvented propane heater in a sealed garage all winter — crack a window or door for combustion air and put a low-level monitor on the wall.
Stop. If you feel a headache, dizziness, nausea, or unusual fatigue while an engine, heater, or generator is running — get out to fresh air immediately. Do not finish the step you're on. If symptoms are severe or someone is confused or unconscious, call 911; CO poisoning is treated with oxygen and time matters. Do not go back in to shut the engine off until your head clears and the space has aired out.
